President, KEMCAANA 2009

KEMCAANA REPORT Spring 2009

Continuing on the heels of the last year’s efforts, KEMCAANA has undertaken several new initiatives. Dr. Mubasher Rana KE 1981, had a great year as President in 2008 with several achievements. Some of the highlights of KEMCAANA’s activities are presented:

At the National level: We are working closely with APPNA leadership. We participated in the APPNA RETREAT held in Little Rock, Arkansas. KEMCAANA was represented by 3 members of its Executive Council including M. Haseeb, President; Mubasher Rana, Immediate Past President and Aisha Zafar, Treasurer. We commend this much needed initiative taken by the APPNA President, Syed Samad. My personal recommendations were to focus on Leadership Development, Leadership Transition and Improvement of Management of the organization.

At the Organizational level: The following activities will reflect what we are doing for our Alumni and Mother Institutions:

Our WEBSITE under the leadership of Arif Agha, KE 1984, has been completely revamped. It has a new look and is very user friendly. We have added some new features including link to:

News from KE: There are several faculty position openings on this link. Any qualified MD may apply for these positions

News from Mayo Hospital: Any updates are presented on this link.

KEMCAANA Forum: This is a new Network created for young Kemcolians at their request to maintain security and provide several features that were not available on the MSN network

Document Verification Service: With a meager fee of $ 55, KE grads can have their documents verified for Licensure, Hospital privileges, etc., delivered via Fed Ex in less than two weeks. This is available online.

VISITING FACULTY PROGRAM: Several KE grads have shown interest in spending time at KE and Mayo. The process is coordinated by the KEMCAANA -KE Liaison Committee Chair, Mubaher Rana. This year Dr. Nasir Siddiqi, KE 1990, Asst. Prof., Dept. of Interventional Radiology, Washington University, is going to Mayo for two weeks in May.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND UPDATE. Established in 2001, this fund has been growing gradually. We are providing scholarships to 54 KE students. “Adopt-A-Student” was an initiative started by Aisha Zafar, KE 1988. KE grads can sponsor a student for $500 per year. This has become quite popular.

KEMCAANA COMPUTER LABS: We have a full time IT person managing the delivery of High Speed Internet service to several departments at KE and Mayo. This service was recently extended to cover more than 300 computers in 57 different locations that include 7 different Computer labs.

ECFMG WEB PORTAL: KE was recently connected to this portal. The use of this portal has eliminated a lot of paper work for checking the eligibility and verification process of KE students to take the USMLE

FREE ONLINE JOURNALS and access to several Textbooks is now available through the e –library.

CURRICULUM REFORMS: We had a full day symposium at KE on Dec. 22nd ,2008 regarding MBBS Curriculum reforms. A follow up meeting with the Steering Committee of KE was held on March 3, 2009. We are hoping to implement important changes by the end of this year.

WATER FILTERATION and a water purification Plant was recently put in place next to the Tennis courts for provision of safe drinking water as a project done by a couple from KE 1981 class.

THE ANATOMY LEARNING CENTER: A gift from the Class of 1980 received a Neuro- Anatomy Teacher software as an additional software program to complete the Anatomy Teaching software’s for both Undergraduates and Post graduates. This Anatomy Learning has become a center of Excellence and now parallels any Anatomy Learning Center of the developed countries in the world.

SWIMMING POOL for Boys: Led by Ather Ansari, KE 1981, this is a 35 Lac Rs. Project undergoing completion.

KEMCAANA RETREAT: The 4th Annual Retreat was held in St. Louis from March 27th to 29th. This was attended by more than 400 people from all over the country. We were delighted to see a significant number of recent KE grads, currently in training come with their families. The retreat was a resounding success. More details will follow in the Summer Report.

We are working closely with KEMCA UK and expect some members from England to attend the Summer Meeting.
KEMCAANA will be happy to share its expertise with all other Alumni Organizations in assisting them with any project that we have the experience of. Please feel free to contact any of our Executive Council members.
